Fair Tax vs. Flat Tax

BY JOHN D. VAN BRINK

Preface – Benjamin Franklin mused, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Due to a revolution in medical technology, including mapping the human genome, nano machines, and advanced pharmaceuticals, some predict that mankind is on the verge of conquering death.

As for taxes, well, not so fast. If we start with the premise that government is necessary, and … Read more...

The Pathos of “Liberalism”

By Tom Kiser

The political left refer to themselves as liberals. They are not liberal in any way other than the liberal, cavalier manner with which they treat facts and truth. But then those of us on the political right go along with and assist with their deception by using the word ‘liberal’ which they use to mislabel themselves. We must find a way to do better.

Freedom is not bestowed; it is achieved.

Observations©

By Donald S. Conkey

Last Friday the Tribune’s editorial staff gave Charles Krauthammer’s outstanding column a caption that inspired this column. It read “The Constitution – Liberals who sneer at it do so at their own peril.”

And indeed anyone who “sneers at the Constitution” today, or ever, does so at their own peril. And what would that peril be? Enslavement and a loss of those freedom guarantees Read more...

Climate Change in the South

By Michael Opitz

The cold weather and snow extending from the southern United States to the Northeast twice in the past three weeks give us pause to consider that this cold may be the beginning of a global shift in weather.  Europe has also been affected, and in some European countries record lows have been set.  There have also been massive flooding of an unprecedented scale in Australia.

2012 Presidential Election – Column No. 1050

By J. Randolph Evans – On Tuesday, November 6, 2012, Americans will decide who will serve as the President of the United States of America.  As the last three elections in 2006, 2008, and 2010 prove, voters are not exactly shy about exercising the rights of “We The People” to decide who governs this country.  2012 will be no different.

The political landscape will be a little different than the … Read more...

The Merging of the Constitutions

By Michael S. Opitz – The United States Supreme Court, in its historic 1964 decision, ruled that prayer in public schools is illegal because it violates the First Amendment’s principle of separation of church and state. The judicial court system at all levels across the land has expanded that ruling to include the prohibition of Christmas manger scenes on government property and the Ten Commandants being posted in county buildings. … Read more...

Read It Here Before It Happens – Column No. 1049

By J. Randolph Evans – Why do folks read this column?  Based on the letters to the editors, there are a few reasons (some not so good, some downright funny).  One good reason is that readers get a pretty good preview of things to come long before they happen.  As political insider Matt Towery often notes, prognosticating is a lot of fun at the time, but can be a little … Read more...
